Functional Skills

About the course:

This course is designed for anyone who wants to improve their Basic English skills for work, further study or personal development as well as gaining a nationally recognised qualification in English. The course will be taught in small and friendly groups where you will be working as an individual and as part of a group. You are expected to sit an exam when you are ready.

Course Structure:

This course comprises of three elements:

  1. English Reading
  2. English Writing
  3. English Speaking, Listening and Communication (SLC)

Course Content: 

  1. Reading
  2. Writing
  3. Speaking and Listening
  4. Group discussions
  5. Presentation

What are the entry requirements?

No entry requirement

Assessment Method:

  1. Observation of the discussion
  2. Presentation for the Speaking & Listening unit
  3. Exams for the Reading and Writing units

Qualification: English Functional Skills Level 1

Course Mode: Day/evening

Duration: 12 weeks

Start Date: The Functional Skill course can be studied at any time during the year, however, this is subject to the number of students.

Progression route?

Through achieving this qualification you will be able to progress onto an English Functional Skills Level 2 course.

Course Costs: The course fee is £450

There may be additional fees to cover for the cost of textbooks needed for the course.

About the course:

Functional Skills English level 2 is design for anyone who wants to progress their Basic English skills for work, further study or personal development as well as gaining a nationally recognised qualification in English. The course will be taught in small and friendly group where you will be working as an individual and as part of a group. You are expected to sit an exam when you are ready.

Through achieving this qualification you will be able to progress onto a Higher Management qualification.

About the course:

Math level 1 is an ideal course for those learners wishing to improve their skills, knowledge and confidence in Mathematics or to develop their existing skills while gaining a nationally recognised qualification. You will be taught in small and friendly groups where you will be working as an individual and as part of a group.

Course Content: 

  1. Add and subtract decimals up to two decimal places
  2. Shapes, Space and measures
  3. Solve problems requiring calculation with common measures, including money, time, length, weight, capacity and temperature.
  4. Extract and interpret information from tables, diagrams, charts and graphs

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal requirements but you will be asked to complete an initial assessment prior to starting the course.

Qualification: Maths Functional Skills Level 1

Course Mode: Day/evening

Duration: 12 weeks

Start Date: The Functional Skill course can be studied at any time during the year, however, this is subject to the number of students.

Progression route?

Through achieving this qualification you will be able to progress onto a Maths Functional Skills Level 2.

This course is suitable for those learners wishing to improve their skills, knowledge and confidence in mathematics or to develop their existing skills while gaining a nationally recognised qualification. You will be taught in small and friendly group where you will be working as an individual and as part of a group.

Course Content: 

  1. Learn or improve your basic number skills
  2. Solve problems requiring calculation with common measures, including money, time, length, weight, capacity and temperature.
  3. Extract and interpret information from tables, diagrams, charts and graphs
  4. Develop problem-solving skills
  5. Finding area, perimeter and volume of common shapes

What are the entry requirements?

No entry requirement but it is advisable for learners to have a Functional Skills Level 1 qualification or equivalent.

Qualification: Maths Functional Skills Level 2

Course Mode: Day/evening

Duration: 12 weeks

Start Date: The Functional Skill course can be studied at any time during the year, however, this is subject to the number of students.

Progression route?

Through achieving this qualification you will be able to progress onto higher qualification.

This course is suitable for those learners wishing to gain practical skills or improve their ICT knowledge and be able to apply the skills safely, confidently, effectively and independently within work environment. You will be taught in small and friendly groups where you will be working as an individual and as part of a group.

  2. Word
  3. Spreadsheet
  4. Email
  5. Internet
  6. Presenting and communicating information
  7. Finding and Selecting Information

What are the entry requirements?

No entry requirement

Assessment Method:

Computer based exam

Qualification: ICT Functional Skills Level 1

Course Mode: Day/evening

Duration: 12 weeks

Start Date: The Functional Skills course can be studied at any time during the year, however, this is subject to the number of students.

Progression route?

Learners will be able to progress onto ICT Functional Skills Level 2.

Course Costs: The course fee is £350

Are there any additional costs?

There may be additional fees to cover the cost of textbooks needed for the course.

About the course:

This course is suitable for learners who want to further build on the knowledge gained from Level 1. Functional Skills ICT requires learners to use the knowledge gained to improve their ICT knowledge and be able to apply the skills safely, confidently, effectively and independently within work environment.

Course Structure:

The course will consist of two lessons per week, with a controlled assessment at the end.

  7. Finding and Selecting Information

ICT Level 1 or equivalent

Computer controlled assessment exam

Progression route?

Learners may wish to further study or gain employment .
