About the course:

The level 5 Diploma in Education and Training(DET) qualification is aimed at individuals who work or who want to work as teachers in the further education and skills sector. The qualification can also be ideal for those who are currently teaching and need to gain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS).
This qualification is equivalent to the Certificate in Education within the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ). The qualification can lead to Qualified Teacher of Learning and Skills (QTLS) status once combined with continuing professional development and a period of professional formation.

Course Structure:

DET is a Level 5 award with 120 credits with a minimum of 100 hours of teaching. The total guided learning hours for the DET course is 360 plus 100 hours teaching. Full-time students should complete the DET in 12 months, and part-time students should complete in two years.
The Diploma in Education and Training Level 5 prepares trainee teachers to teach in a range of contexts. It is an in-service qualification, which means there is a significant practice requirement, and as such you should be in a teaching/training role, as this qualification will assess, and provide evidence of, competence when undertaking teaching and/or training responsibilities

Entry Requirement:

Grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths – or a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in English and Maths and a minimum of a Level 3 qualification in the subject you wish to teach.
You will need to have 100 hours of teaching practice working with groups throughout the duration of the course. Therefore, Students should attempt to source their own teaching hours to fulfil the requirements of the course. The work may be paid or unpaid. Croydonsam may agree to provide unpaid employment for suitable candidates intending to teach in the higher education (HE) sector as well as helping you by supplying contact details in some cases liaising with likely providers, however, cannot guarantee you a placement.
All students will need to undergo a DBS check before commencement of teaching.

Additional costs:
It is vital that all students have their own up-to-date computer/ laptop and internet for blended learning/assessment/access to online college resources.
All applicants are advised that the fees paid cover the cost of tuition for programme delivery, but there may be additional costs to cover, for example, books if required, stationary, a DBS check.
Parking on Croydonsam premises may also be an additional cost.

Assessment Method:
You will complete various assignments, both theoretical and practical. You will be assessed by production of a portfolio of assignments and observation of your teaching practice.
Your tutor will check your work, they will also provide you advice, support, and guidance to achieve the standard required by the awarding body. There are no formal exams, however the DET course requires that your tutor will observe you teaching your own students on a minimum of eight hours. Total observation for the course is at least 8.

Course Mode:
Full-time. Sessions is once a week during the day for six hours in total.
The part-time. Sessions is once a week in the evening for three hours.

Start Date: Every September /January/ May.

Progression route?

Once you have completed the DET Course, your portfolio will be sent for a final external verification. Once this process has been completed you can become employed in a full-time teaching role and apply for your Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS) with the Society for Education & Training (SET).
You need to become a member of the SET to apply for QTLS status. There is a fee for membership of the SET and a fee for applying for QTLS, both of which you will need to pay. Further information can be found
