About the course:

The qualification is suited for those who are looking to progress from their current job role (directly below that of the manager) to a managerial position. It is preferable that those looking to join this apprenticeship course have acquired the Level 3 Diploma or Advanced Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care as this will broaden their skills and experience which in turn will help them transition smoothly onto this course. 

Course Structure:

The course consists of mandatory and optional units. The programme pathways are tailored to the students work role and work setting. learners must achieve a minimum of 70 credits overall. 

  1. 36 credits must be achieved from the Mandatory Group, 
  2. A minimum of 6 credits from Optional Group A  
  3. A minimum of 28 credits from Optional Group B.  
  4. At least 55 credits must be achieved at Level 4 or above.

Course Content: 

The 12 mandatory units consist of:

  1. Work in partnership in health and social care or children and young people’s settings
  2. Advanced communication skills
  3. Personal development in health, social care setting
  4. Equality and diversity in health, social care setting
  5. Facilitate person centred assessment to support wellbeing of individuals
  6. Facilitate support planning to ensure positive outcomes for individuals and to support well being
  7. Understand personalisation in care and support services
  8. Health and safety in health and social care settings
  9. Professional practice in health and social care for adults
  10. Safeguard children and young people who are present in the adult social care sector
  11. Develop, maintain and use records and reports
  12. Understand safeguarding and protection in health and social care settings

The optional units selected in group A and B will be closely related to your area of work, this will allow you to tailor your qualification to suit your role in the workplace.

Assessment Method:  For this course, there are a variety of ways in which students will be assessed which are listed below. Each assessment format assesses your skills and progression throughout the course.

  5. Candidate work products 
  6. Statements.

Progression route? 

Through achieving this qualification you will be able to progress onto a Higher Apprenticeship (Level 5), undergo nurse training or enter close related health and social care sectors.

Course Costs:The Current legislation regarding apprenticeships states that those undergoing an apprenticeship programme must be employed. Hence, apprentices must be paid the minimum statutory pay for apprentices and contractually employed on a full-time basis. The employers are responsible for these fees.

The new Apprenticeship Reforms actualise from April 2017 with an innovative funding system beginning on 01 May 2017.
The following information establishes the key points that we currently know:

  1. Pay bill over £3m p.a. = Employer Levy @ 0.5% of total pay bill for UK-based staff
  2. Pay bill less than £3m p.a. = Employer Co-Investor @ 10% (Government pays 90%)
  3. Pay bill less than £3m p.a. and less than 50 employees = Employer Waiver @ 100% Government funded for 16-18 year old apprentices and employer 10% co investment for 19 plus
  4. A supplementary £1000 incentive for all employers and providers for taking on a 16-18 year old Apprentice and / or 19-24 year old previously in care or with an Education and Health Care plan
